Originally the story is about the Temple of 1000 Bells, but what I heard is that the bells were kept in a tower, and the original story has changed pretty much different from the one I heard about. I will retell this story as I heard it.
There was once, a tower by the sea with 1000 bells kept inside it. When the bell is rung together, it will create a sound of harmony and became an entertainment for those who lives near the tower. The sound of those bells is really serene and beautiful, and as the night goes darker, the sound would be more loud, and become the sign of life that always goes on.
However, now the tower and its bells are now merely legend. The tower had sunk in the sea and no more of its voice are now heard. The serene harmony are now just a bed time fairy tale told by parents to their children. However, some people had admitted that they often hear the sound of the 1000 bells, even after it was sunk into the sea. This legend attracts a young man, who is very curious with the harmony of the 1000 bells.
One day, he set off from the place he lived, and made a far journey to the island near where the Tower of 1000 Bells is used to be. After he arrived, this young man interacts with the local people and found some discoveries about the legend.
At night, the young man went to the beach, and began to listen very carefully. He tries to find the sound of 1000 bells ringing, but his effort is futile, as he only hears the sound of rustling leaves and waves crashing. Day by day he keeps trying listening to the voice of the rumored bells, but even after months, he has heard nothing.
This brought him to a conclusion that the sound of 1000 bells is truly and legend, and no such thing ever existed. He decided to go back to where he was.
On his 'last' night, he went again to the beach where he had spent his time trying to listen to the voice of the bells. He bid his farewell to the trees that has accompanied him, to the sea with its circling waves, to the bright moon that always illuminates his night at the beach, and once again for the last time, he concentrated his ears to listen that sound once again. This time with his heart relaxed and as calm as ever.
The leaves rustles, the sea once again circling its waves, and the wind blows slowly...
Suddenly there's a sound of bell ringing. One bell, two bells, three bells, and slowly it's increasing, the sound of 1000 bells resounding, creating harmony. The young man hears the sound, and he had never felt peace more than ever. His search has ended, for the sound is only for those who had been patient enough to search after it. The harmony is only for those who is in peace.
So, that's the story I remembered. There's more an afterstory, though, but I don't remember which. I think the story is really simple, but there's something beautiful about it which I cannot describe.
I hope you enjoy the story, and thanks for reading!
